Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera chose his favorite contributions from all submissions received to incorporate into the chapter, and we’re thrilled to let you know that he chose your students’ contribution. We thank you again for your and your students’ excitement, imagination, and participation in this project, and hope you will continue to help Catalina on her journey when we post the next chapter and prompt!

Middle School Reading Hearts Club

It's official! The kindles have arrived complete with their red covers and loaded with books from the Young Readers Choice Award Program. The students need to read a minimum of three books to vote for their favorite book.

Middle School Author Visit

Today, the Middle School had an interesting author visit from Dianne Salerni. Dianne Salerni writes middle school fantasy and mystery books, and YA fiction. Mrs. Salerni presented a Writing Emotions Workshop with a lesson on showing emotion through character body language. The presentation included opportunity for a student writing activity and group sharing. The Middle School students did a wonderful job demonstrating the use of the writing skills Dianne Salerni had presented. It was an exciting event to kick off Middle School Language Arts classes and the library!

Halloween Mystery Reader

Margery Covello, grandmother of Maeve Martinelli, and first grade teacher of Mrs. Scholl, the librarian, came to Sacred Heart today. Mrs. Covello was our mystery reader and read The Little Old Lady Who wasn't Afraid of Anything to the PK - 2nd grade. The girls participated in the reading with props brought by Mrs. Covello. Fun was had by all!

PSLA 2015

I attended the 2015 Pennsylvania School Librarians Conference in Hershey last week. Last year I came back to my library invigorated and ready to make some changes that included: moving the lower school non-fiction books to shelving that is easier to access; taking inventory and weeding; teaching more research lessons in 6th and 9th grade; consider a curating tool like LiveBinbers or LibGuides; and using Moodle more to flip some lessons and promote online learning. I was able to make most of my goals. Moving the non-fiction books proved to be an excellent decision with many young students opting to check out both non-fiction and fiction books. This next school year, I hope to once again try to purchase LibGuides to curate digital resources for students and teachers. I also plan to blog and tweet more about what is happening in the library. The students and I may also do some self publishing using the iPads. It is always wonderful to attend professional development and come back to school with some fresh ideas for learning!
